  • Before I Forget Completely...

Feb. 23 - went to a party, got my cell phone and camera stolen.
Feb. 28 - Finance midterm - not fun at all. almost started a fight in the SUB but stopped because i had a midterm to write.
Feb. 29 - Stats midterm - more fun than finance, if you consider Stats fun. i felt like i was cheating the whole time because it was an open book/textbook/notes test.
March 2 - wrote an astro quiz on the positions of the stars in the sky. probably the most useful quiz i've ever written at university. i can now look at random dots and name constellations. pretty sweet.
    - went shopping downtown
March 5 - Human Resource Management midterm, basically solidified my idea that i only need to go to class once in awhile. i've only been to two or three classes since.
March 7 - Pledge/Active dinner at Rainbow's house. wrote a speech but didn't have to read it because we got pledge trainer by default. looking forward to whipping those pledges into shape with mackenzie.
March 9 - house party at Tobie's. had total flashbacks to high school but that was okay.
March 10 - FINALLY had my family birthday dinner - only 2 months too late.
March 11 - watched 300 with friends, walked out of the theatre wanting to do some situps and go start a war.

    Beginning of hell week:
March 12: family studies midterm in the morning, visit to LFA in the afternoon and Phrateres meeting in the late afternoon. stayed at LFA for an hour and a half scaring the grade 12s and telling them they'll probably fail out of first year.
March 13: final for coed vball with the Packers. we won!!!! finally sweet victory
March 14: another visit to LFA. smaller group this time and basically told them that LFA will not prepare them at all for university. and silly stuff like what to wear and how going to school with boys is very distracting because they don't care about school most of the time.
    - had a medical emergency on the bus ride home and basically got home in time to just shower and leave to go back to UBC to attend formal initiation.
    - overdosed on cheesecake before going back to Kappa Sig. got on the bus and went down to east hastings (yeah that east hastings) to go sing karaoke at the Met. fav memories: singing "Stop" by the Spice Girls and "Heartbreaker" by Mariah Carey with the Phrateres girls. we even made it through jay-z's rap! seeing a girl with bunny ears and a guy in a kilt and a moose hat belt out a few songs. bad memories: being stranded at the bar until 1am when i had to herd people onto the bus. and wanting to punch another girl out for getting in my face (i blame 300)
March 15: bball at 8 - it was a pretty sweet game but i had to leave 'cause we had girls vball finals. unfortunately we lost in one of the most intense games ever and i fortunately did not punch out one of my team mates who was totally getting on my nerves (i blame 300 for my violent behaviour)
March 16: Me Inc. Business Conference. spent an hour having breakfast by myself and walking around downtown wearing a dress suit and heels and feeling really old. i notice vancouver isn't as formally dressed as i thought it would be. the conference was really good - some good speakers, some really boring. really enjoyed the closing speaker's story about a business he started in high school and soon sold for 1.5 million. networking makes me so tired - but i had to go to costco (still in my suit) and went out for chinese (chicken chow mein without chicken) and i realized chinese only tastes good with meat
THAT WAS BY FAR MY WORST HELL WEEK EVER

March 20: spent 2 hours in a boardroom going over a union collective agreement - it was actually kind of fun.
March 23: after a week of designing ACF shirts - finally got to "relax" at Bedrock!! except the security team talked to me as if i were an ESL ditz but whatever. watched Miss USA with liz for about 2 hours and made hot dogs as well. finally got to party but only as we were closing down. still good times.
March 24: went out for dinner with the Packers vball team at Migz BBQ. So GOOD! we ate so much so quickly and then headed out for dessert. it was fun to wander Broadway late at night, haven't done that in awhile.

add in random shopping days, lots of sleep and vball/bball games and you've got my life for the past month.

    upcoming:
    - Boat Racer (my first one 'cause i tanned last year)
    - Phrateres Formal
    - AlphaDelt Formal
    - ACF
    - finals
    - Philippines!

    LENT!

It's supposed to be a time of reflection, prayer, sacrifice, almsgiving and general darkness. My family's always taken it seriously but not to the extreme but it's still fun to freak out all the non-Catholics with some crazy stories. Today is Ash Wednesday - and for some reason I always loved it. In elementary school, we'd have to write down our Lenten promises on pieces of coloured paper and throw them into a fire pit as we entered the church. I was the biggest pyromaniac in elementary school so that whole process was fun. I think one year I volunteered to supervise over the fire pit. I was ecstatic. And I totally remember looking at everyone's foreheads as they came back from the altar to see who had the darkest or biggest cross. And then we'd all run to thebathroom after mass to check out our own. I also remember watching an episode of the Rosie show and seeing both Michael J. Fox and Rosie O'Donnell with crosses on their foreheads. I thought it was pretty cool.

And then came highschool. It was the same except I liked Ash Wednesday because it took so long. We usually had mass before lunch and if mass went into the lunch hour, the principal would usually keep the lunch break the same and just take time out of F+G block which was fine with me.

And since I didn't go to mass last year, this was my first year going in University. My mom told me to go at 11am with all the elementary school kids but since I didn't feel like talking to all my old teachers, I just slept in. Bad idea. I went to the night mass and the church was completely packed with some people standing outside. And good news, I got a HUGE dark cross this year. First time in awhile that's happened. hahahaha.

I haven't totally decided what I'm giving up. One year it was iced tea (i used to drink it 3x a day, everyday), and chips, and the usual chocolate. One year my dad was a vegetarian. I haven't had meat in 30 hours and i'm totally craving a steak right now, so that's not gonna happen. Some people give up television. I think I'll just stick to a 10 minute a day Facebook allowance.

What else? Oh yeah, Feb 4 to Feb 11 was my hell week. Nothing to do with school (that's next week) but i played 10 volleyball games and 1 basketball game, mostly with no subs. That included Howl at the Moon, a midnight volleyball tournament. I played 4 games of co-ed reverse-4's from 11pm to 3:30 a.m. Thank god for Red Bull. the week wasn't bad at the time but I was completely dead by the time it was over.

Good news! I'm going to the Philippines! YEAH! i'm so excited! so much shopping! so much sunshine! i leave 12 hours after my last final - so UBC better not change the final exam schedule! more about it later!

  • Memory Box

January 5: Joint birthday party with Danaka at Royal. Started off with dinner at Zefferelli's (so good, i recommend it) then we walked, yeah walked, to Royal. i obviously only walk that far when i'm intoxicated. good times ensued.

    20th

Jan. 8-12: first week back at school. it was especially hard going back because i hadn't really gotten much of a christmas break because i was working most of the time. my classes include: statistics (somewhat interesting math), finance (boring math), human resource management (learning how to say "You're Fired"), family studies (learning why i'm so screwed up and blaming my family) and astro (falling asleep while we learn about the stars). i also have massive breaks spread out throughout the day, but at least there's always the Phrateres office.

Jan. 11: Volleyball All-Stars game. it was fun until i hit a ball so hard, it bounced off a girl and got stuck in the rafters of the gym. i swear, i wasn't trying to kill her. she must've flinched, adding extra velocity to the ball.

Jan. 13: i sat in a chair for 4.5 hours while getting my hair done. it was well worth it.

    before (see above) and after...

    20theds

that night, went to dinner and watched The Holiday. i loved it! along with Love Actually, i will now have to watch it every Christmas.i had gotten into the habit of hating Cameron Diaz and Jude Law just because all i see of them is hate posts on www.perezhilton.com but i liked them together in the movie . Kate Winslet is a goddess and Jack Black is genius. "You're supposed to be the leading lady in your own life, for God's sake!" - Iris

Jan. 19: almost perfect day. finished school at 2 then went downtown and met up with my mom at pacific centre. she was feeling extra generous and paid for my clothes. sweet. then went to Stepho's for the best Greek food outside of Greece. then went to VC to watch some high school bball.

Jan. 20: my hate for technology started when my MP3 player died and i was forced to upgrade. then my dog knocked my laptop off of my bed at 3 in the morning. the laptop's fine but the adapter is dead. so overall, i'm just fed up with cables and wires and hardrives. went out for Ed's birthday. the night involved a lot of walking...

    20theds2

and lots of indecision. letting 20 university students out on the streets of vancouver without a plan is not a good idea. the group slowly got smaller and smaller and by one point i think we were discussing the parallel to "And Then There Were None" and i think we decided that Rolando was the killer.

    rolando

we finally ended at Plush and all was well. except for the people who went missing.

Jan. 27: Shasta's birthday at Caprice. i felt amazingly young because it was 21+ night. i guess i should go there if i ever feel too old. i think i overdosed on brie cheese and blue hawaiians.

Jan. 28: Phrateres Alumnae Tea at Club Viva. amazing location, it makes me happy just to be there. right on the water in a huge apartment building, surrounded by water, it's sweet. Sat around stuffing my face with other Phrateres from as far back as 1944. it's sobering to hear that back then the only options for women at UBC were nursing, education and maybe medicine. i would've died or gotten married like most girls did ... in their FIRST year. damn, can you imagine that?!

Throw in tons of volleyball games, a few basketball games, lots of afternoon naps by the pool at UBC and an hours or two of studying and you've got my life in the past month. bring on February!

  • On My 20th Birthday

So this is it - I'm not a teenager anymore. It's not exactly a life changing event but there's still the rest of the year to come. I still have to get used to telling everyone that I'm 20, but that'll come easily soon enough. The teenage years were pretty damn good, full of firsts and hopefully a few lasts, but I have a feeling that the 20s will be just as good, probably even better.

Anyways, I'm going to be pretentious and shallow here and say that Vogue magazine has always had the ability to influence decisions that I make in my own life. When most think of Vogue, they think haute couture fashion and weird, outlandish photo layouts, but there's some good stuff in there. Most recently I was sick and bed ridden and I picked up an issue that I had bought before finals but never got around to reading (I do that a lot). My new inspiration comes in the form of an article entitled "Euroflash: Young, fast-moving and fashion friendly, a clutch of chic Europeans is making news on the social circuit"

    Dodi and Camilla Al Fayed

"On a sunny afternoon early in the most recent go-round of pret-a-porter shows in Paris, a group of Bright Young Things had gathered...Duly noted: European girls like Camilla [Al Fayed], taught from an early age by their mothers to live as well as they look, entertain with the greatest of ease...What are the customs of this young set? Peripatetic beyond description, its members speak at least three languages but usually four - French, English, Spanish and Italian - and they have probably studied German, too. They switch effortlessly in conversation to whichever language they feel like or think might best express what they wish to say next. They talk softly and believe a voice is not only a social signifier but an instrument of good manners: Never should it be used as a boom box for entitlement. They do not say like, like every other word, or you know after every pause...a BYT Europe's favorite place to shop is her mother's closets - God bless the popularity of vintage and mothers who can afford couture...They do not wear Juicy Couture or any other tracksuits outside the house...They love to dance...They drink in moderation and usually retire fairly early (around 2 a.m.) even on a party night. All-nighters are for amateurs, and getting dressed up to get smashed is considered rather absurd...Their favourite airline is, well, a private jet...they take taxis, not limousines, unless their parents are in town - but then it is a Mercedes-Benz sedan, never, ever a stretch, or they will walk...Summers are spent in less psychedelically oriented spots as Monaco, St. Tropez, and Sardinia, where their families have houses or palaces, as the case may be...The welcome offered the social nouvelle vague is also part of the European backlash against a kind of random celebrity worship that is considered anti-intellectual, probably a bit too American, and just generally not cool...When it came to philanthropy, Princess Caroline [mother of Charlotte and Andrea Casiraghi] did not instruct her children to be reticient. 'Even if you have only a glass of water to put out a volcano, you should try to do it anyway'" - Vogue, December 2006.
